Dr. Annie Valuska, a principal pet behavior specialist for Purina, offers expert advice on how to help pets play more.

MIX IT UP

To determine your pet's preferred play style, Dr. Annie suggests "putting on your scientist hat and experimenting. Try different types of play, toys, styles of movement, games, locations and times of day."

LOOK FOR SIGNS

Pay attention to how pets "try to solicit play from you," says Dr. Annie. "Do they return to a favorite playtime spot, go to the cupboard where you keep a specific toy or present the toy to you?" Learn your pet's cues so you know when they are ready for fun.

BE PATIENT

Don't fret if your pet doesn't take to a new toy instantly. "That's totally normal," says Dr. Annie. "Many pets need multiple exposures to something before they begin to like it."

SCHEDULE IT

Dr. Annie suggests dedicating time every day to playing with your pet to improve its "overall well-being." And remember, always "keep it a positive experience."
