When was the last time you thought about your brows? If your eyes are the windows to your soul, your eyebrows are the curtains -- and keeping them in check can have a huge impact on your look. Follow these steps for the best brows in town.

KEEP THEM NATURAL

Overly shaped brows are not the look. "The less you touch the brows, the better," says Paulo Siqueira, the eyebrow designer at Sage + Sound in New York City. Use sharp tweezers, such as Tweezerma Stainless Steel Slant Tweezers ($24), to remove errant hairs that fall above or below the shape of your brows -- like lining up your beard. Leave a few behind for a more natural appearance, and never touch the tails (the part closest to your ears).

GIVE THEM A TRIM

This is "the number-one key to looking groomed," says Jared Bailey, global brow and beauty expert for Benefit Cosmetics. First, brush your brow hairs up toward your forehead. For thick or coarse brows, apply a gel, like Benefit 24-Hour Brow Setter ($26), or a clear pomade, like American Crew Pomade ($18), beforehand to help hold them in place. Then use cuticle sissors to trim the long hairs that fall outside your brow shape, like those scraggly suckers that happen as we age. Trim hair by hair, not straight across. "You don't want all the brow hairs the same length," says Bailey. "You just don't want them to stand out."

TWEEZE THE RIGHT WAY

Home waxing? Clippers? Forget it. The only way you should be removing eyebrow hairs yourself is by tweezing. Use one or two fingers to keep the skin taut, then use your tweezers to pull the hair out in the direction it's growing up, down, or sideways. That'll make it a little less painful. "Do it when you get out of the shower," says Bailey. The head and steam help open your follicles, so you can remove the hairs more easily.

STYLE THEM UP

Just as they do for your hair, styling products make your brows look more polished and help keep the hairs in place. A tinted product that matches your natural color can "give the illusion that your brows are fuller and thicker," says Siqueira. A clear brow gel provides flexibility and hold, and Benefit's Fluff Up Brow Wax ($26) delivers volume and matte finish, says Bailey. If you have dry brows that sometimes flake, Siqueira recommends using a little bit of beard oil to keep them moisturized.
