The popularity of toners is surging. It's more than just hype. Here's how to pick the right one and put it to use.

Toners -- liquidy solutions that are applied to your face after cleansing -- were originally developed because old-school soaps were so harsh that they destroyed the pH balance of your skin. Toner helped restore that balance. These days, cleansers have dramatically improved, yet the appeal of toners is still on the rise. That's because using one just might unlock your best skin yet.

WHAT A TONER DOES
In some cases, toners still work to restore your pH balance. But thanks to the wide variety available (everything from brightening to exfoliating versions), "people are using them to add ingredients that enhance other benefits for the skin," says New York City-based dermatologist Marisa Garshick. Since toners have a thin, liquid texture, your skin can absorb them -- and their active ingredients -- very easily.

HOW TO USE A TONER
Hydrating tonors are typically gentle enought to use every day; exfoliating toners should be limited to about once or twice a week. (Keep in mind, "skin care is not a one-size-fits all," according to Garshick.) Apply both kinds of toners the same way: After cleansing, use either a cotton pad or your fingers to gently pat the liquid into your face. No need to rinse.

WHICH TONERS TO USE

OILY SKIN
Garschick recommends an alcohol-free toner with ingredients like witch hazel to help control oil.
THAYERS FACIAL TONER WITH WITCH HAZEL; $11

EXFOLlATING
Salicylic acid helps clear away dead skin cells that stick to the surface of your skin and inside your pores, working to keep your mug clear and bump-free.
PAULA'S CHOICE SKIN PERFECTING 2% BHA LIQUID exfolIANT; $35

ON THE GO
"A toner is an easy thing to throw in your gym bag to have something without necessarily doing a complicated routine," advises Garshick. Make it even easier with a mist -- just spritz it on after washing your face.
BIOSSANCE SQUALANE + HYALURONIC ACID FACIAL MIST; $32

DRY SKIN
To infuse more hydration, use a toner with hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
KIEHL'S ULTRA FACIAL TONER; $24

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?
- Apply a witch-hazel toner to soothe itch from bug bites.
- Hydrating toners can help with post-shave irritation, and exfoliating toners can help reduce ingrown hairs.
- Sunburn? If it's not blistering, use a moisturizing toner.
